Insights
  • More than 15 years have passed since the first edition of Andonno e Cuneese, the first comprehensive guide to the Cuneo area edited by Severino Scassa. Over this long period, many new features have been added to the climbing scene. Although Andonno has lost none of its appeal and remains one of the most important crags in Italy, this new edition sheds the name of its former queen and is more democratically dedicated to the Cuneo area, now recognized as a major sport climbing destination.

This guide features numerous historic sites previously described in other publications, but which have seen modifications and new bolting over the years. It also includes a good number of crags bolted in recent years that have not yet been included in any publication. Here, we find all the main crags in the Maira, Grana, Stura, Gesso, and Vermenagna valleys, including the extraordinary Casterino crag. Then there are the Ellero, Maudagna, and Corsaglia valleys, and the main sites of the Tanaro Valley, including the famous Pian Bernardo.

As always with Versante Sud guides, there's a cultural section, with a broad geographical and historical introduction, and contributions from key figures, both old and new, in the local climbing culture.

Simone Greci, originally from Alba but now based in Cuneo, began climbing and mountaineering in 2003. In 2021, he earned the title of Alpine Guide, fulfilling a passion that has seen him dedicate himself not only to climbing but also to the development of the area, overseeing the bolting and rebolting of several local crags. His climbing activity knows no bounds: always seeking new vertical challenges, he regularly travels throughout Italy and abroad to explore new walls. Since 2024, Simone has combined his management experience and his passion for teaching by managing, together with the Globalmountain Guides Group, the Borgo San Dalmazzo climbing gym, a hub for the local climbing community.

Keoma Chiavassa, a passionate mountaineer, began climbing in 2010 on the crags and multi-pitch routes of the Cuneo valleys. During numerous trips to Europe, Asia, and Oceania, he also practices trad climbing, bouldering, and deep water soloing. Since 2020, he has been a USACI sport climbing technician and is active in the local area, teaching, also in collaboration with organizations working in the social field, and training new technicians. He dedicates part of his time to maintaining some local crags and bolting and developing new walls.

Enrico Turnaturi, born in Turin in 1989, lives in Caraglio and works as an Alpine Guide. He is also an Alpine skiing instructor and coach. Since 2021, he has been a National Instructor for Alpine Guide training courses. In the winter, he dedicates himself to ski mountaineering and ice climbing, of which he is a great enthusiast. In the summer, he alternates classic mountaineering with technical climbing ascents. A great lover of rock and passionate about photography and travel, he has already climbed in various parts of the world on some of the most iconic mountains. His passion for the vertical world has led him to open routes, single-pitch routes, and multi-pitch routes, with a view to further developing climbing in the area.
