The book describes over 100 climbing sites in the Pellice, Chisone and Germanasca Valleys, in the piedmont area with Rocca Sbarua, Monte Tre Denti, the crags of the Cumianese area and last but not least those in Val Sangone. Climbing and mountaineering have always been present in these valleys and important sites such as Rocca Sbarua bear witness to a leading activity since the early 1900s. Important names such as Boccalatte, Gervasutti, Rivero, Rossa, Motti, Grassi and others have left their mark, giving us the most beautiful classic routes that have now become historic. The evolution of mountaineering towards an activity much more focused on climbing rock alone and without the aim of reaching the summit was the incipit that took Andrea Mellano and his group of friends to mature the idea of promoting the first sport climbing competitions with “Sportroccia ’85”.
From there on, the cliffs multiply, but there are those like Fiorenzo Michelin, co-author of the previous edition, who have opened an incredible number of routes in these valleys, developing the Bourcet as the largest site of interest in the Chisone Valley and offering the opportunity for economic and tourist growth in the area.
The landscape changes radically: if you are in the lower valleys, the walls are mainly immersed in chestnut and beech woods, as you gain altitude you leave space for conifer woods and pastures to reach the higher ones in the classic Alpine environment with an abundance of lakes and views from which you never miss a glimpse of Monviso.
This third edition of Passaggio a Nord Ovest, divided into two volumes, enriched and updated, testifies to how these valleys are full of opportunities to spend a beautiful day on walls and itineraries for all tastes.
Federico Marcellino was born in Pinerolo in 1988 and lives in the same town where he discovered sport climbing at the turn of the new millennium, at the age of 12, at the sports association “La Pietra” of Donato Lella. He practices all mountain activities at 360°, from ice falls to mountaineering at high altitude, from crag climbing to multi-pitch routes and trad, and has participated for several years in FASI competitions at a regional level, mainly in the bouldering circuit. His passion subsequently pushed him to train and take the title of National Instructor of Free Climbing of the CAI, transmitting his enthusiasm in the courses of the Intersezionale Valli Pinerolesi School and in the LPV Regional School. He also dedicates himself to the redevelopment of cliffs and climbing routes in his valleys, trying to maintain what his predecessors have created.
