Insights
  • The heart of Lazio mountaineering lies between Gaeta and Circeo: 18 kilometers of coastline now boast 249 multi-pitch routes, a significant increase from the 192 listed in the previous edition.

Driving this evolution is the remarkable exploration of Sperlonga, whose sectors—from Eden to Pilastro di Ponente, from the Grande Muraglia to the Mura di Amarcord—have seen a proliferation of multi-pitch routes, offering a variety of seaside climbing unique in Italy. This growth also involves Gaeta: although numerically smaller, the historic crag has seen both an increase in available lines and significant maintenance and restoration of its most iconic routes.

The fruit of long-standing firsthand experience, this new, updated edition confirms its invitation to look beyond the usual top-rope approach to transcend single-pitch climbing and rediscover the commitment of multi-pitch routes.

Alongside the mapping of each route, with a minimum length of two pitches, the project continues its valuable work of historical recovery, bringing to light lines that time was about to erase. This comprehensive and passionate fresco is designed to leave an indelible mark on the vertical memory of these walls.

Luigi Filocamo, a retired chemist and university researcher, is a mountaineer, ski mountaineer, and former CAI instructor. A key figure in Lazio's vertical climbing scene since 1984, he has always been dedicated to equipping and restoring the walls of Gaeta, Sperlonga, Monte Moneta, and Leano. His legacy as a bolter and promoter can also be found in Calabria (Stilo, Canolo, Frascineto), Sicily (San Vito Lo Capo), and Sardinia (Lanaitto, Surtana).

Fabrizio Antonioli, a geomorphologist, paleoclimatologist, former ENEA Research Director, now a member of UniTriest. A mountaineer since 1974, a National Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, he was director of the Palermo and Rome Mountaineering Schools. He has completed 400 alpine ascents in the Alps, establishing new routes in the Sahara and the Sinai mountain range, new routes and first winter ascents on the Gran Sasso starting in 1977, and numerous new climbing routes in Gaeta, Sperlonga, Leano, Circeo, and throughout Sicily.
