Climbing in Greece: Meteora in Thessaly; Kalymnos, the climbing island par excellence; Leonidio and Kyparissi, increasingly popular locations for crags in recent years. Then there are the islands of Tinos and Kos, which have made Greece a popular destination for bouldering enthusiasts. Among all these options, however, Athens had never been heard of.
In the collective imagination, climbers included, the Greek capital has remained what it has been for thousands of years: a place where history can be experienced firsthand. Yet its surroundings offer such a wealth of rock that it is one of Europe's richest cities in terms of climbing opportunities!
Dozens of crags, multi-pitch routes, and bouldering areas with over 800 problems, with entire guidebooks dedicated solely to this area, a remarkable and surprising reality that deserves to be explored and supported. In this issue, we therefore wanted to present what Athens has to offer climbers, through the words of its protagonists. Giorgos Chaziris will present some of the area's most important crags and the Athenian climbing scene. George Papageorgou and Antonis Sovantzis will discuss the many bouldering areas in Attica. Their interviews, along with those of other climbers who gravitate toward these crags, will allow us to better understand the climbing community that brings them to life.
The issue is rounded out with a general section packed with interviews, suggestions, reflections, and training sessions, to further expand our understanding of the climbing world.
