Routesetting
The essence of a climbing gym
-
Surely, you've found yourself wondering more than once, in the middle of a fun climbing session at the gym, who creates this colorful "canvas." Who creates these mind-blowing routes that put you to the test? Who bolts in the holds and volumes? Who keeps them in perfect condition?
Behind all this work is the routesetter. He and his team are responsible for designing the routes and problems that unfold on the panels, making sure you have fun and surprise you with new moves every time you climb the wall.
Whether you're a professional route setter, someone who wants to explore the world of route setting, a gym owner, or even just a climber who loves training in the gym and is curious to know how these fun moves on the panel are created, this manual is for you. In it you will find all the information, work tools, efficiency and organizational methodologies that will be useful to you in understanding the world of marking.
Guillermo Burba, originally from Argentina and a graduate in Computer Science, began exploring this profession in 2000 at a climbing gym called Perù Beach in Buenos Aires. It's still active today and is one of the most important in Argentina. At the time, routesetting wasn't much of a topic, and the game consisted mostly of moving holds from one place to another with a wrench and marking routes with colored tape. Furthermore, the wide variety of holds and volumes we find today didn't exist, so achieving good routesetting required considerable mental and physical effort. His passion led him to join one of the largest climbing gym companies in Europe: Sputnik Climbing, where, alongside top professionals, he works every day to develop climbing and take routesetting to new horizons.
