The concept of safety applied to an environment, such as that of the mountain and walls of all sizes, naturally complex and by its nature absolutely never free from objective dangers, even significant ones, may sound like a paradox. In fact, this manual is not a "safe mountain recipe book", nor does it want to become "the mountaineer's manual of the new millennium"! We have tried to describe techniques and materials, their use and their application in the environment. The neophyte, but also those who already know and use the notions illustrated here, will be able to draw useful ideas and advice to better face mountaineering and climbing.
A first substantial part of the manual illustrates in detail all the hardware that is normally used in all vertical disciplines, from the crash pad to the most sophisticated materials for big walls and high altitudes. The maneuvers and knots, in addition to being photographed in detail in the pages of the book, can be viewed in downloadable videos with QR code to provide intuitive and complementary support to the illustration of the same. The reflections and insights into new materials and ongoing climate change make this text absolutely current, a manual that absolutely cannot be missing from the library of those who approach the mountains and the various disciplines of climbing and mountaineering at any level.Paolo Tombini was born in Biella, a professional mountain guide since 2007, he carries out his activity mainly in the Alps in all seasons. His background ranges from climbing, repeating routes up to 8a, to the mountains in the Alps with the great routes and modern routes, from Bianco to the Dolomites. Across the ocean, a visit to Yosemite Valley to climb El Capitan and an expedition to Madagascar on the walls of Tsaranoro to open a new route. Travels and expeditions in Norway, Patagonia and the Himalayas. He has collaborated as a writer in the drafting of numerous articles and texts on the theme of mountaineering and climbing.
Carlo Gabasio was born in Gaglianico, a small town in the province of Biella, he has been an alpine guide since 1991, an alpine guide instructor since 1997 and director of the alpine guide courses until 2021. He combines the activity of instructor with that of guide, accompanying, teaching, traveling and trying to transmit all his passion to those who love to be tied to his rope. In addition to mountaineering activity throughout the Alpine arc, he has a total of about thirty extra-European expeditions to his credit.
