The massif of Gran Sasso is multifaceted, with ever-changing shapes, rocks, views, landscape. This huge variety is a boon for climbers: there you can find extremely compact and technical slabs, vertical and sheer rock faces rivalling with the Dolomites, any kind of rock structures, from overhangs to sunny walls, to wild and deserted ramparts, with dihedrals, cracks, chimneys. The quality of the rock varies a lot too, spanning from excellent and compact to loose debris. To sum up, there’s climbing for every taste!
This guidebooks doesn’t review all the routes of the massif: it’s a selection of meaningful routes, both from the past and the present time, of different difficulty. The authors chose the aesthetic and historic value, the elegance, the landscapes over the “coolness” of the routes.
The selected routes has been labelled according to an overall evaluation of the climbing potential – you’ll find four different “subtypes” which will help to navigate the guidebook and to choose your route: Plaisir, Modern Climbing, Classic Mountaineering, Adventure Terrain.

About the Authors

Alberto Bazzucchi, born in L’Aquila in 1967, is living there, where he works as a consultant for a think-tank of the local Chamber of Commerce, dealing with local economics. He’s always been a keen mountaineer, although he focused on climbing only recently. A member of the Alpine Rescue Team, he’s collaborating as a teacher for the Mountaineering school “Nestore Nanni” from the local Alpine Club. His playground is obviously the Gran Sasso massif, yet he has explored the whole Alpine range, preferring wilderness and winter conditions.

Igor Brutti was born in 1967 but he grew up in Grottammare (AP). This way, he manages to enjoy as well the seaside! He’s working in the Alpine Rescue Team of Guardia di Finanza since 1989, and lives in L’Aquila with his family. He’s become an Alpine Guide in 2008, exploring especially the Gran Sasso area, both for work and passion. He also climbed several noteworthy routes in the Dolomites and in Western Alps. He loves as well travelling by camper near the coastline, exploring new places for climbing – especially in Sardinia and Sicily.
